about

An emotive snapshot of several moments that we experience through the human condition, Oliver Rhodes, known to fans simply as Paracusia, conveys and transmits a spectrum of emotions on his 4-track inaugural release for Paradise Lost Recordings.

We start out in the Blackest Winter, apt seeing that this project sees a winter release. Guided by a stripped down and gated break, Rhodes provides ample sub depth and washed out pads to convey the mood that many of us feel with winter's early sundowns, bitter temperatures and the lack of Vitamin D combining to lull us into a melancholy state.

Signals maintains the stripped down but groove-heavy percussion feel, but increases the claustrophobia begun on the first track. Bass weight here is at a maximum and never lets up as we move farther down the dark rabbit hole.

That rabbit hole dead ends on Money Power Control, a deservedly cynical look at our society's decaying of moral principles, if we indeed ever had those collective principles. Steppy breaks meet the blackest bass and reverb-laden textures to bring us to the dark climax of the release with a rejection of the Money Power Control trinity. Rhodes, as the track explicitly communicates, simply does not want those things.

Hope, or nostalgia, is on the horizon with Last Summer, where Paracusia manages to lift us into an emotional place where we can imagine the last sunset of summer and our collective experience of trying to hold on to it for one more day. A track which harkens back to days of The Orb along with massive slabs of bass, Last Summer captures an amber, washed out Polaroid memory of a moment, something most producers aren't able to do in the electronic format, perfectly capping off a release that showcases a rare ability to craft drum and bass to emotive states. An amazing EP, and we're proud to propose it to you, dear listener...
