about

Paradise Lost is changing gears, entering a new musical era without restrictions in style and tempo. In this mission, label favorite Rakoon comes correct with his debut artist release "Sandworm EP", delivering six fresh, dark and deep 172bpm Drum&Bass cuts. Intricate half-time and two-step beats, punishing basslines and broding atmospheres rule supreme on this stinky pack of tuna!

Militant step weighs heavily on "Sleeping Giants", never letting the light shine through and instead punishing you with an unrelenting, reverberated bassline and threatening voice FX samples. It conjures a tense atmosphere that would sit cozy in a Terminator-style dystopian future. "Safir" also utilizes a no-snare, no-nonsense militant halftime approach, but exhibits a more claustrophobic atmosphere occasionally broken up with sliced-and-diced break edits. Euphoric pad breakdown disintegration manifests like the sun breaking through clouds, only to be obscured again by tension and darkness. Title track "Sandworm" runs on a stripped two-step beat but it’s all about the oscillated bass vibes here - the late 1990s called and they want their bass back, but Rakoon isn’t obliging. Slip this funk monster into the mix and watch the vibe take over like an incurable virus! Rolling kicks and tight hihats dominate "Guard", a robo-funk event that plays with all colors of dark elements throughout. "Filter" runs along a similar vein but manages to change the tone to a more dubbed-out, melancholic timbre. Final track "Meltdown" is a nod towards an older school of DrumnBass and Jungle - carefully edited breaks take center stage, are blanketed by a warm analogue bassline and chaperoned by ethereal pads and textures. The result is a brilliant slice of funk that wouldn’t be out of place in a 1990's Reinforced Records set - classic vibes-a-plenty here!

Rakoon builds a strong case with his "Sandworm EP", a case for healthy beat experimentation and for uncompromising sound and atmosphere. Paradise Lost Recordings shares this musical vision and will continue to bring you releases like this - high-quality, forward-thinking electronic music of different persuasions and perspectives.
